CompetitionsCompetitions provide dancers with the opportunity to perform on stage in front of a judge. Highland dancers are judged independently and then ranked from 1st - 6th place. Competitions allow dancers to see areas of dance technique that they can improve on and motivate dancers to push themselves further. We recommend competing for all dancers because it creates confident and hardworking students.
Dancers compete by level and age. The levels are: Primary (6 years and under), Beginner (7 years and up), Novice, Intermediate, and Premier. To compete, dancers must be SDTA members. This membership provides dancers with a card that gets stamped at competitions if a dancer gets a 1st, 2nd, or a 3rd. A dancer will move up to the next level once they have received six stamps. Dancers can only receive one stamp at each competition (regardless of how many 1sts, 2nds, or 3rds they received). In other words, a dancer must compete in at least six competitions and receive at least a 1st, 2nd, or a 3rd in each competition (in traditional dances only) to move up to the next level. |

In May of each year the Provincial Championship competition is held. This competition determines which Premier dancers will represent Manitoba in the Canadian Championship Competition Series. There is the Overall winner, 1st runner up, and 2nd runner up. All dancers are invited to compete in Canadians even if they do not hold the Representative title.
